Gyarados is obviously super cool. Complicated, but super cool. I also think they did a great job of keeping some of Magikarp's design elements. You can see a relationship even though there's such a radical difference between them.
I think this one actually worked better at the line art phase. I think a Pokemon with such a bold design needs something a little more bold in it's color rendering.
